About Ruth Dronsfield

I am an artist based in the UK who loves to create expressive, playful and dynamic imagery in both abstract and stylised representation. I am equally engaged by colour and monochrome, and always preoccupied with intense compositions and layering.

I have had a lifelong love of making and teaching art and now have over 40 years’ experience. Until relatively recently, teaching art was the main focus of my working life. I have now shifted my focus so that making original paintings and prints is my main priority.

My ideas often begin in places, landscapes, flora and fauna — things I observe closely, remember, or reimagine. Having loved looking at art since childhood, I now have a long and continually growing list of inspiration.

I move between recurring themes and motifs, celebrating what I see, feel and experience, using both digital software and traditional drawing and painting materials.

My work seeks to express an appreciation for the bitter sweetness of life, to celebrate everyday moments, and to express the hope and peace I have through my Christian faith.

In 1990 I graduated from St Martin’s School of Art (now University of the Arts London) with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. I went on to gain my teaching qualification in Art and Design at the Institute of Education, University of London, and taught children and young people in a range of educational settings.

I have exhibited my work in galleries and public spaces around Essex and London. Since 2012, my art teaching practice ‘Creative Art Classes’ has provided workshops for adults and children. I now focus more on my own work, but continue to teach and mentor in a more flexible way.

My work is held in private collections around the world, and I regularly undertake commissions.
