FAQ
Who are you?
I am Ruth Dronsfield, a British born artist living and working in Essex in the Uk
Did you go to art school?
I attended the then Central St.Martins School of Art from 1986 to 1990, now known as University of the Arts, London.
What is your art about?
A lot of things! Such as; sharing some light in a dark world, momentum, persistence, joyful creative expression, and often keeping my head above water. Also creating and exploring beautiful and interesting imagery which people can enjoy.
Who are your art heroes?
I have been fortunate to see first hand some of the world’s greatest art collections and wonderful exhibitions as I have lived close to London and received all my education in central London. The first time I remember seeing a painting and thinking, ‘I want to do that’, was seeing ‘The Window’ painted by Pierre Bonnard in1925, at the Tate modern when I was about fourteen.
Some other heroes include some great women artists such as Mary Fedden, Gillian Ayres, Georgia O’Keefe, and wonderful British abstract painters such as Ben Nicholson and Patrick Heron. Paul Klee and Emil Nolde greatly influenced my watercolour paintings, and then popular favourites, Matisse, Picasso and Kandinsky have influenced my use of colour and composition, and the freedom to try anything in a picture! David Hockney’s innovation and use of iPad has to be acknowledged. I am a bit of a magpie; I look, I see, I distil ideas and allow them to influence and inspire me.
I’m so pleased to see work by anyone who seeks to bring some joy, love and generosity into the world.
What is an open edition print?
An open edition means that there isn’t a limited number made.
I am planning to offer some special limited edition prints in the future.
Are you represented by a gallery?
Iam currently not represented by a gallery. When you buy art from this website you are buying directly from the artist.
What else do you like doing apart from making art?
Being a dog owner, being in my family, enjoying my garden, belonging to a church and exploring faith, walking by the coast and in the countryside, collecting vintage mid-century china, reading novels, writing stories and poems, watching great TV!
Why are your prints more expensive than say from IKEA or John Lewis?
I am an individual artist running my sales as a small business
Giclée is a method of printing which uses very high quality inks and I have chosen to offer mine on professional high quality Hannemühle cotton rag paper. Large companies produce prints on a large scale so costs would be cheaper. All prints ordered through www.ruthdronsfield.com are made to order so the cost to me is significant. This current collection is exclusively available from this website.
